The Onyx Series of solid state drives from OCZ are a group of 2.5 inch solid state drives having capacities of 60 GB, 120 GB and 240 GB. These SATA II SSDs are capable of reaching a maximum speed of 235 MB/s and 230 MB/s for read and write respectively (on the 240 GB model). Similarly, IOPS numbers are tops for the model with the highest capacity at 23,000 and 7,500 for random 4k read and write respectively.
Inside the Onyx Series SSD is Indilinx’s Barefoot 2 controller. It is the one responsible for managing the Asynchronous Mode MLC NAND modules inside the SSD. The drive also comes with 128 MB of onboard cache.
Features of the drive include ECC recovery which, according to OCZ, can recover 78 random bits per 1 KB of data. Self-monitoring, Analysis and Monitoring Technology or SMART is also present. Performance can be optimized through TRIM but it would depend on the operating system used. The Onyx Series can be used in personal computers running Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, MAC OSX and Linux. Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) for the drive is 1.5 million hours with a warranty of three years.

Reviews:
The Onyx doesn’t exactly blow the competition away in the realworld performance tests, but it does at least have the edge on its closest competitors…
This 32GB drive is too cramped to replace a laptop drive, but for a desktop PC, it’s a cheap way to speed bootup and app-launch times
