840 EVO mSATA

Samsung followed their 840 EVO SATA III SSD with an mSATA version of the drive of the same name. The 840 EVO mSATA is available840-evo-msata in 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB capacities with a maximum throughput of 540 MB/s (sequential read) and 520 MB/s (sequential write). For random IOPS, the numbers are 98,000 and 90,000 for read and write respectively. As expected, these maximum numbers are achieved by the 1 TB model.

Running the show for the 840 EVO mSATA is Samsung’s proprietary controller, ┬áthe MEX 3-core ARM Cortex R4 with a clock speed of 400 MHz. It manages the 19 nm Toggle DDR 2.0 TLC NAND flash modules inside the solid state drive. An LPDDR2 is also present cache is also present whose capacity is dependent on the storage size of the drive. For the 1 TB model, the cache size is 1 GB.

A notable feature of the 840 EVO mSATA SSD is DEVSLP which is a technology that allows this drive to perform background tasks even while it is asleep. The drive also has two supported modes of encryption: AES 256-bit and TGC/Opal 2.0. The 840 EVO mSATA comes with a limited three-year warranty.

Reviews:

tweaktown:

I’m not surprised by the performance of the 840 EVO mSATA 1TB. After installing the 2.5″ 750GB model in my daily use notebook, I continue to be impressed with the drive’s responsiveness, capacity, and ability to handle my I/O heavy applications.

bit-tech:

With Samsung having maintained performance from the original 840 EVO in this drive, it’s a fairly sure bet that it’s done so at lower capacities too, so you should also be well covered if the mighty 1TB model is out of your league.

thessdreview:

By tackling, performance, price, capacity and chalking on a bag full of amazing extras, Samsung has guaranted the success of the industries first 1TB mSATA SSD!
