840 Pro Series

samsung 840If ultra slim form factor is your thing then the 840 Pro series could be your choice for a solid state drive. The 840 follows Samsung’s 830 series and is, no doubt, the faster one. Its maximum sequential read speed reaches 540 MB/s while its maximum sequential write speed is 520 MB/s. But the more daunting number could be the IOPS for this solid state drive: its random read IOPS is 100,000 while its random write IOPS is 90,000.

Inside the Samsung 840 Pro Series SSD is the company’s very own controller which is a 3-core eight channel MDX controller. There is a 512 MB DRAM cache present and the NAND use is 21nm MLC toggle mode type.

The 840 Pro Series is one of the lowest power-consuming solid state drive of its generation. When idle, the drive consumes approximately 3.2 W of power and when active, it only uses 0.03 W of power. This solid state drive comes with a five-year warranty and is available at capacities of 64, 128, 256 and 512 GB.

Reviews:

anandtech (archived):

The performance and power characteristics of Samsung’s SSD 840 Pro are as close to perfect as we’ve seen from any drive this generation. In all but a handful of benchmarks, the 840 Pro is the fastest consumer SSD we’ve ever tested.

StorageReview:

The good news is that the SSD 840 Pro provides more than just an alternative to Marvell- and SandForce-based SSDs – it brings a lot to the table of its own for upgrades, enthusiasts, and high-read enterprise storage applications.

Toms Hardware:

Although we’ve had it for a very limited time, Samsung’s 840 Pro is making a good first impression in our lab. It’s very quick, topping a majority of our benchmark charts. Moreover, it achieves its great performance while using less power than its competition. This makes the 840 Pro the fastest, most efficient SSD we’ve seen to date.

TechSpot:

As important as performance is, reliability has become a large concern for new SSDs, and Samsung has excelled here.

thessdreview:

With the 840 Pro Series SSD, Samsung has pushed to lead and struck gold on three fronts, two of these being very high IOPS performance with very low power use.
