335 Series

Intel 335 SeriesThe 335 Series of SSDs utilizes Intel’s 20nm NAND Flash Memory Multi-level Cell (MLC) modules and is powered by SandForce’s SF-2281VB1-SDC controller. At launch, it is available in a 240 GB model only, but more capacities will likely be available later on. As a SATA III 6 GBps drive, the 335 series boasts of a maximum sequential read speed of 500 MB/s and a maximum sequential write speed of 450 MB/s. On a similar note, the IOPS numbers at random 4k read and write for this solid state drive are 42,000 and 52,000 respectively.

Compared to the preceding 330 series, the main difference with the 335  drive is 20nm NAND vs. the (higher-quality) 25nm NAND in the 330. Although they are both rated at the same number of P/E cycles (endurance), early tests indicate that endurance may be much lower in the 335 SSD.

Other features of the 335 Series SSD include native TRIM garbage collection as well as S.M.A.R.T and Native Command Queuing with 32 slots. Like other SF-2281 controlled SSDs, the 335 Series is included with enhanced ECC with BCH data protection and RAISE (Redundant Array of Independent Silicon Elements). Mean Time Between Failure for this drive is 1.2 million hours.

Intel has generally been our recommended brand when it comes to buying SandForce drives. The same will likely be true for the SSD 335 as well, however we’re going to hold off on any final judgements until we get another sample in house so we can confirm at least somewhat similar endurance to the outgoing 330.

We can’t recommend it when the 240 GB SSD 330 still sells for less, undermining the entire point of this exercise

StorageReview

The Intel SSD 335 Series offers class-leading performance for a mainstream SSD, even besting enthusiast-grade drives in many areas. While the migration from the SSD 330 is about smaller NAND, it’s clear Intel’s understanding of the SandForce controller has improved as well, as the SSD 335 is a big jump forward from the prior generation.
